Most law firms see the first measurable movement within 60 to 90 days; competitive terms take longer. A month-by-month timeline, what speeds it up, what slows it down, and what to measure.

The short answer

Most law firms see the first measurable movement from SEO within 60 to 90 days: new practice pages indexed, Map Pack positions improving, more impressions, and the first calls or form fills from organic search. Competitive terms — personal injury in a large city, for example — take longer. No one can honestly promise a date for a #1 ranking.

"Movement" and "results" are not the same thing, and the gap between them is where most frustration comes from. Below is what normally happens in each month, what changes the pace, and the numbers worth watching so you can judge progress yourself.

A month-by-month timeline

This is the pattern we plan around. The work column is what should happen; the second column is what you should be able to see. Every market is different, so treat the timing as typical, not promised.

WhenThe workWhat you should see
Month 1Audit; call tracking and GA4 events set up; Business Profile category and services fixed; technical problems corrected.A baseline: today's calls, form fills, Map Pack positions and impressions. Fixes live.
Month 2Practice-area and city pages published; directory listings made consistent; review requests started.New pages indexed in Search Console; first impressions for longer, specific searches.
Month 3 (days 60–90)More pages and content; reviews and mentions keep building.First measurable movement: Map Pack positions, impressions, and the first calls or forms you can trace to organic search.
Months 4–6 and onContent, reviews and links compound; competitive terms are pushed.Broader and more competitive searches start to move. How far depends on the market.

What makes it faster or slower

FactorFaster when…Slower when…
Your websiteIt already has indexed pages and some history. It is brand new, or most pages are not indexed.
Business ProfileVerified, in the right category, with reviews.New, in a generic category, or suspended.
CompetitionSmaller city, less contested practice.Large metro, heavily advertised practice.
PagesOne page per practice and city you serve. One "practice areas" page for everything.
ReviewsSteady, genuine reviews.Few, old, or none.
Technical healthFast, mobile-friendly, crawlable.Slow, broken links, blocked pages.
ConsistencySame name, address and phone everywhere.Old addresses and numbers across directories.

A suspended Business Profile is the biggest single brake: until it is reinstated, the firm cannot appear in Maps at all. See how to get a suspended profile reinstated.

Why some practice areas take longer

Competition is the main reason. Personal injury and criminal defense in big cities are among the most heavily advertised searches, with established firms that have years of content, reviews and links. Estate planning and family law in a smaller city usually face fewer, less entrenched competitors. Mass tort searches compete nationally rather than city by city.

The work is the same; what changes is how much of it is needed before the competitive terms move. Practice-specific detail is on each page: personal injury, family law, criminal defense, estate planning.

What to measure in the first 90 days

  • Pages indexed — in Google Search Console, under Pages. New practice pages should move from "Discovered" or "Crawled" to "Indexed".
  • Impressions — in Search Console's Performance report. These rise before clicks do.
  • Map Pack position — checked across your service area, not only from your office.
  • Calls and form fills — from call tracking and GA4 events.
  • Signed cases — matched to their source in your intake system. Personal injury firms can use the lost case calculator to estimate how many cases visibility gaps cost them.

Judge the first 90 days on whether these are moving in the right direction. Judge the return on signed cases over the following months.

Red flags in timeline promises

  • "Page one in 30 days." Google says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking; a firm that promises one is either guessing or planning shortcuts that put your site at risk.
  • Reports with only rankings. Positions can rise while the phone stays quiet. Ask for calls and form fills.
  • A long contract before any work is visible. You should see fixes and new pages in the first two months.
  • Dozens of city pages at once that differ only by name. Fast to publish, and treated as doorway pages.

Frequently asked questions

Can law firm SEO work in 30 days?

Some fixes show quickly — a corrected Business Profile category, for example — and new pages can be indexed within weeks. Measurable movement in rankings and calls usually takes 60 to 90 days.

Why does SEO take longer than Google Ads?

Ads show as soon as you pay. SEO depends on Google crawling, indexing and trusting new pages, and on reviews and mentions that build over time. The upside is that the visibility does not stop when the spending does.

Does a new website take longer?

Usually. A new domain has no history and no indexed pages, so expect the early stages to run toward the longer end of the range.

What if my Google Business Profile is suspended?

Getting it reinstated comes first; until then the firm cannot appear in Google Maps. The timeline starts once the profile is back.

When should I judge whether SEO is working?

At 90 days, judge the direction: indexed pages, impressions, Map Pack positions and the first calls. After that, judge it on signed cases.

Do you guarantee results by a date?

No one can guarantee a ranking by a date. Our 90-day guarantee covers measurable progress in rankings, traffic or leads; if there is none, we keep working at no extra cost or refund the fees for those 90 days.
